Recently my husband and I were looking for a short break in the UK, somewhere not too far away and preferably somewhere not too expensive. It was a mini celebration, my husbands 40th and a slightly early wedding anniversary, so it needed to be somewhere moderately special to mark the occasion. That was where we discovered the ultimate romantic Mallorca getaway, the Ratxó Retreat Hotel Meliá Collection.
It was everything we were looking for and more, a serene escape, nestled in nature yet brimming with luxury.
It is a fairly new hotel but it really is a hidden gem, set in the heart of the island, which promises an unforgettable experience for couples seeking a short yet rejuvenating European break.

Before I get into the hotel itself, I wanted to outline a few things that would have made our stay better:
Negatives
As amazing as the hotel was, we did experience some negatives during our stay.
This one isn’t really a criticism but is more a personal preference. I love trying new foods and that is a massive draw for me when booking a holiday, but my husband is very what you’d call very beige!
The menus on offer aren’t big, and the food choices are quite limited if you’re fussy, but if you’re not then you will love what is on offer. My husband mostly lived on club sandwiches and the most amazing French fries! The french fries weren’t on the menu, but we asked for them and they accommodated us – and we noticed we weren’t the only ones to ask. Here is the lunch menu and the room service menu is a limited version of the lunch menu.
Not a criticism at all, but as limited as the food choices are for fussier people in contrast the breakfast on offer was absolutely amazing, they had everything from cereal, granola, fresh fruit, fresh pastries, cold meats, lots of fruit juices, freshly made flavoured yoghurts and a selection of warmer options and smoothies.
Whenever we go on holiday, having access to bottled water is important to us. We are more than happy to pay for it but we just want to have easy access to it. At this hotel you get a small glass bottle in your room, but you have to ask for more. You can also buy the glass bottles at the bar and restaurant. But there is no onsite shop and no shop that is walkable from the hotel.
Something we thought would work is if when you arrived you could buy a bottle or drinks bottle and have various water machines dotted around the hotel, this is a small thing that would make a big difference. Having been on all inclusive holidays where you stay on resort (like this one), we found that day time refreshments were really lacking. When it’s hot, it would be nice to have the option to get an ice lolly or an ice cream in between meals, but sadly this was not available to purchase anywhere.
During the day there is complete silence besides the sounds of nature which again is lovely, but by the pool or at the bar a little ambient music would go a long way.
It mentions on their website there is a total of four restaurants and bars. What it actually is is one main restaurant which is outside, they do have an indoor restaurant but this was shut during our stay. The main bar is also part of the main outdoor restaurant. There is a more intimate indoor bar, but this looks like it is only used for functions. So really there is one restaurant and one bar which is part of the restaurant, which is quite misleading as you end up in the same place for food and drink, for lunch and dinner and evening drinks or day drinks.
I have mentioned the food choices, however one thing we weren’t aware of is that every Friday is BBQ night, and if you don’t go for the BBQ then your choice is room service. You are asked at breakfast if you would like to book a table for the dinner, but it is not explained that if you don’t then your choices of something are very limited.
We were quite keen on the BBQ so we booked, but no where does it mention anything about pricing so be careful. On the whole the food is very reasonably priced compared to the UK. The choices available at the BBQ were lots of meats, and a whole host of salad bits and tapas and not much more.
So for a fussy eater of a husband and myself who loves a BBQ but more the meat, potato salad, salad, pasta, etc parts of a BBQ it was VERY underwhelming. Between my husband and I we had a chicken breast from the BBQ sandwiched between two slices of bread each and a quarter portion of brownie each (the desserts aren’t regular sized desserts, they are more the size you’d expect from a tasting menu).
We didn’t even have the equivalent of one persons sitting, but we were still charged €55 each, so €110 for two chicken sandwiches and two sample sized desserts which was absolutely ridiculous. The desserts were comparable to those at package holiday all inclusive hotel. Had we of known this at the start we definitely would have given the BBQ a miss. However, if tapas and meats are your thing, then you will more than likely love this evening.
Now that I have outlined everything I thought could have been better, here is what I loved about the hotel.

This was what we were up against:
- 4* UK hotel 3 night hotel stay – £1087 (£362.33 per night, Thurs to Sun)
- Food and Drink – £460
- Total £1547 which in todays money is a lot for 3 nights away in the UK!
We joked we could go somewhere much nicer abroad for the same price and that set about our mission which lasted 3 days of searching and we ended up on the Ratxó Retreat Hotel Meliá Collection in Mallorca for 3 nights for pretty much the same price!
- Flights – £400 (included a 20kg suitcase and 2 small hand luggage)
- 3 night hotel stay – £770 (£256.67 per night)
- Airport Transfers each way – £88
- Food and drink – £460
- Total £1561
When you put that into perspective a 4* UK hotel break vs a 5* abroad break, a difference of £14, it has completely changed our mindsets for the future when it comes to mini breaks!
Pack your bags, leave your worries behind, and immerse yourself in the magic of Ratxó Retreat. Your perfect romantic Mallorca getaway awaits.
