Valentine’s Day ideas: Edinburgh

by Hannah

There’s something incredibly rewarding about planning the perfect weekend break. Whether you’ve planned a fortnight in Barbados or a weekend in the Cotswolds, knowing there’s a holiday on the horizon can put a real spring in your step throughout the dreary winter months.

Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom in February: Valentine’s Day is great justification for spoiling your spouse. It’s also the perfect excuse to plan a whirlwind weekend trip for two, and it goes without saying that you don’t have to go as far as Barbados for the thrill of adventure, as the UK is brimming with excellent locations for Valentine’s breaks.

For the chance to rub shoulders with some of Scotland’s hottest literary talent, opt for a weekend in Edinburgh. Bestsellers and literary national treasures Ian Rankin, J. K. Rowling, Alexander McCall Smith and Irvine Welsh all call Edinburgh home. If the 200ft Gothic spire dedicated to poet Sir Walter Scott doesn’t prove the city’s love for literature, perhaps the glut of cosy independent bookshops will. Chintzy tea rooms and fab cafés offer a snug retreat from sightseeing, with comfy chairs perfect to curl up in with a good book.

Edinburgh is packed with nooks and crannies of historical interest, including two cathedrals – the beautiful Saint Giles and Saint Mary’s – and the famous Edinburgh Castle. The Surgeons’ Hall Museum is the perfect way to spend an hour or two absorbing some of the grislier aspects of Scottish history, while the Police Information Centre is also surprisingly fun, as it’s home to both a working police station and a museum dedicated to the policing of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is beautiful in the chilly mists of February, but lovers of theatre and comedy may want to save the trip for the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival. During the summer, the city plays host to no fewer than nine major festivals celebrating a variety of arts, from cinema and literature to jazz and fringe theatre. With so much choice, Edinburgh is a great location for a weekend break, whatever your interests.
