Doing my best at being organised

I’m the one who sorts out the bills in our house. Both my husband and I pay for the bills but I am the one that arranges all of the standing orders and direct debits and basically coordinates what goes in and out of our joint bank account. I have a nice filing unit that has suspension files, clearly labelled with each utility etc. It’s a shame that I don’t file paperwork as often as I should, instead I always end up blitzing the piles of papers and bills that accumulate in the drawer underneath the computer every now and then. It’s a long arduous task to say the least.

We all have our roles in the home and my husband has his (he does honest!). I feel that I’m not as organised as I would like to be but I am reasonably happy that I have it all together when it comes to paying for the essentials and keeping everything ticking over. I like to know that everything is just so and that of course we aren’t paying over the odds for any policies. Goodness know we pay enough for our electric every month but that is a whole other story, believe me. So if I can make savings anywhere else, I will make sure of it.

So when I get the annual renewals through for home insurance and car insurance. I am always stuck in a quandary as to whether I should stick with who we are with or changeover to a competitor. I’ve had so much hassle in the past changing over from electric suppliers and phone companies that it can be offputting to make the switch. The easiest transitions are of course the ones where the companies make it easy over the phone or through filling out online applications. I do always find though that I am best arranging policies over the internet as I can be duped too easily on the phone and never want to fall foul to someone rather persuasive!

In an ideal world, I’d have a lovely clear workspace, with immaculate filing drawers with everything in order. My husband is terrible at filing documents away let alone actually opening his mail to start with. He does rely on me to store them away for his future reference and I can usually find him scrabbling through the drawers, panicked looking for something really important. Which reminds me that I am due another ‘sort out’ soon because if he does try and find something he might have a mission on his hands…
